AFAF makes a difference!
OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- How about a little word association to start off this year's Air Force Assistance Fund donation drive...What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Air Force Aid Society (commonly referred to as Air Force Aid)? Most people either think, "Please do not ask me to donate money, again!" or "I'll never need Air Force Aid; I have savings for emergencies." Well, I am here to tell you that what you don't know about the Air Force Aid Society matters to you, your Airmen and our families.
Here at Osan in 2013, the Society loaned over $54,000 to 70 military families in need. This was not just money for emergency travel, though they supported a tremendous amount of that--33 assists in fact! The Air Force Aid Society at Osan also assisted in 24 instances of emergent basic living needs such as food, rent, utilities, and phone bills, 9 occurrences of vehicle repair or payments, and 3 medical and funeral related financial needs. Bottom line, the Air Force Aid Society is there for you when you need them most, when what you never expected to happen and could not plan for occurs.
As if the emergency financial support isn't enough, the Air Force Assistance Fund does not stop there. At Osan, over $9,000 has gone to community programs such as Bundles for Babies, Give Parents a Break, Childcare for PCS moves, Spouse Employment and Heart Link, and an amazing $24,750 has been donated to the Hap Arnold Grant Program for children and spouses!
The Air Force Aid Society is the official charity of the United States Air Force, with a 72-year history of helping Airmen and families through emergency assistance, education programs, and community programs. In 2013, direct Air Force Aid assistance totaled over $17.4 million assisting over 75,000 Airmen and their families. In 2014, as an added incentive, the Society will award up to $2,500 for bases achieving both their contribution goal and 50% or more active duty participation. Every dollar donated to the Society supports emergency assistance, education, and community enhancement programs, but those donations only cover about one-third of the support the Society provides; so, let's get charitable Team Osan!
This year, our Air Force Assistance Fund committee has set a few goals:
1) Attain 100% contact rate across the installation--too easy! Learn about Air Force Aid and talk about it!
2) Beat last year's participation rate by 5%, by getting 35% of our population to contribute. But come on, let's shoot for 50% and get the Society to pay it forward to our Osan community!
3) Raise $105,000 to care for Airman and their families, for all of those situations that will never happen to you...until they do.
This year's campaign will began on March 24 and will run through May 12. Make a donation; make a difference!
