Tuesday September 16, 2014 Humphreys Central Elementary School will receive a personal visit from mother-daughter team Debbie and Jennifer Fink, authors of “Little C.H.A.M.P.S: Child Heroes Attached to Military Personnel”. Their visit is part of the USO’s on-going mission to support military families through every phase of their service – through deployments, recovery and as they transition back to their communities. “The Little C.H.A.M.P.S,” serves as a public health initiative to provide coping tools for children of military families facing challenges. The initiative is also designed to celebrate their service to our country and to raise awareness among civilian children about the lives of their military-connected peers.

The authors have partnered with the USO to provide the “Little C.H.A.M.P.S” book to children in military families as a way to help them cope and thrive as a military dependent. The book follows the children of five Service members who represent different branches of the military as they endure the trials of deployment, saying goodbye, and parents returning home as wounded warriors. The book concludes with lyrics for “The Little C.H.A.M.P.S” song reminding children that “Goodbyes are not forever, goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean we’ll miss you, until we meet again!” During the visit, Debbie Fink will read the book, teach the song and discuss what makes military children “CHAMPS.”
