SAMSUNG, Seoul, South Korea -- Eighth Army Soldiers and Civilians took part in the 2014 International Peace Marathon Festival at Samsung, Seoul, South Korea Oct. 3.

The International Peace Marathon Festival is an annually held event hosted by Gangnam-gu and Eighth Army. This year, there were approximately 10,000 participants including 575 Soldiers from Eighth Army throughout the full-marathon, half-marathon, five and 10-kilometer courses.

Eighth Army Deputy Commanding General Maj. Gen. Brian J. McKiernan and Command Sgt. Maj. Ray Devens attended the event to support the participants and promote peace on the peninsula.

"This is a great opportunity to strengthen the co-operation and friendship between the local community here and our Soldiers and Family members from Eighth Army," McKiernan said.

Mr. Gang-Won Jeong, a resident of Gangnam, participated in the event last year and ran this year as well.

"Last year, I ran in this marathon because it was held near home, and I thought this would be a good chance to exercise, but I found another reason there, too," Jeong said.

"I found it meaningful running with U.S. Soldiers who are at their best keeping the peace within not only Korean Peninsula but also North-Eastern Asia. That was what made me want to run here again, and I hope the relationship between South Korea and United States stays forever," Jeong added.

With his Eighth Army t-shirt, General McKiernan ran the 10-kilometer course with his fellow Soldiers. Most of the Soldiers passed the finishing line with outstanding times emphasizing the 'fit, disciplined and ready strength' of Eighth Army.

"It was great. The weather was perfect, the course down Han River was great, and it was very enjoyable," McKiernan added.

After the event, McKiernan and fellow Soldiers were presented with an award from Shin Yeon-Hee, the district head of Gangnam.

65th Medical Brigade's Col. Angela G. Mysliwiec won the first place for the woman's Five-K.

Attending events like this helps show that Eighth Army Soldiers are fit, disciplined and always ready to stand side by side with our RoK partners.
