CAMP HUMPHREYS -- Private First Class Janet Sierra, a Company C, 304th Expeditionary Signal Battalion Soldier, currently assigned to the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Tax Center, goes over tax filing information with Pfc. Darren Thomas, assigned to Company A., 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, Jan. 27. After a brief ceremony and cake cutting, the Tax Center staff, made up of Soldiers and civilian volunteers, began helping customers. The military-based Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free tax advice and preparation, return filing, and other tax assistance to military members and their families. Last year, the Humphreys Tax Center processed more than 1,600 federal and state tax returns, obtaining more than $3 million in refunds and saving users of the service more than $209,000 in preparation fees. VITA tax specialists are trained and equipped to address military-specific tax issues. All personnel have completed the Pacific Rim Tax Course sponsored by the Army JAG Corps and the IRS VITA Training Course and are certified tax preparers. The Tax Center is located on the first floor, in Bldg. 578 (across the street from the Child Development Center).
