McKiernan meets Korean War legend in Seoul
SEOUL, South Korea (March 26, 2014) -- The Eighth Army deputy commander for operations met a Korean War legend and honorary Eighth Army commanding general here, yesterday.
Eighth Army Deputy Commanding General for Operations Brig. Gen. Brian J. McKiernan met retired Republic of Korea Army Gen. Paik Sun-yup in Seoul.
The Republic of Korea Army's first four-star general, Paik served in 10 major battles during the Korean War, served on the Korean War Armistice commission, and helped to establish the Korean Augmentation to the U.S. Army program.
In 2013, Eighth Army named Paik as an honorary commanding general and named its mobile command post after him.
The former deputy commanding general for support for the Fort Bragg, N.C.-based 82nd Airborne Division, McKiernan recently reported to Eighth Army during the annual Key Resolve command post exercise.
McKiernan said it was a great honor to meet Paik.
"General Paik has served together with us on the front lines of freedom for more than six decades," said McKiernan, a native of Providence, R.l. "In our alliance today, we walk in the footsteps of legends, and it was an honor to meet one of them."
