VFW Bonifas-Barrett Memorial Post 8180 of Seoul, Korea traveled north to join their Adopted Unit (the JSA Battalion) in Panmunjeom at the DMZ on Nov. 23 in a ceremony honoring the sacrifice of KATUSA CPL Jang, Myong-Ki in 1984.

This day thirty-one years ago was marked by KCPL Jang and PFC Michael A. Burgoyne engaging a force of some 30 North Korean soldiers pursuing and firing on a Soviet defector fleeing south of the Military Demarcation Line of the DMZ.

KCPL Jang laid down his life in defense of freedom "In Front of them All" (the motto of the JSA), enabling the UN Command Quick Reaction Force to respond and hold the North Koreans at a stand still further ensuring the promise of freedom to the defector.

Six members of Post 8180 took leave from work to be in attendance, offer respects to the JSA and surviving family as well as lay flowers at the memorial. The Post purchased a large adornment for the ceremonial altar as well.

"...to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead..."-VFW Charter
