Yongsan stays strong through Typhoon Bolaven
YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- Typhoon Bolaven roared through United States Army Garrison Yongsan, but it didn't quite pack as big of a punch as was expected, Aug. 28.
Typhoon Bolaven caused little damage, including a few power outages and fallen trees on the Army installation within Seoul. But USAG Yongsan's Directorate of Public Works quickly responded to those incidents by bringing back power to on-post residents and clearing the downed trees.
The Directorate of Emergency Services also provided first responder assistance during those situations. It also ensured personnel moved safely on the installation as Typhoon Bolaven made its way across Yongsan.
In addition, the Directorate of Logistics ensured the safety of Ulchi Freedom Guardian participants from high winds by moving the UFG members from "Tent City" on Camp Coiner to the Collier Community Fitness Center. The DOL also issued Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) to Servicemembers due to the temporarily closure of the Honor's Café Dining Facility.
An instrumental part to executing the DOL's mission was the service and support provided by the 9th Korean Service Corps, Mobile Labor Forces team.
"Experience is the best teacher," said Darryl Wright, an operations specialist with USAG Yongsan's Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security. "We learned many good lessons from Typhoon Kompasu, and it really showed in our level of preparation and execution for Typhoon Bolaven."
The DPTMS operates through real world emergencies and joint-combined exercises; force protection measures and initiatives; and helps keep the Area II Community a safe place to live and work.
"Our top priority is for the safety and welfare of our Servicemembers, Families and Civilians," said Col. Michael E. Masley, garrison commander for USAG Yongsan. "We at Yongsan do everything possible to ensure our Area II Community is receiving the best quality service no matter the situation we are placed in."
Aside from real-world experience, USAG Yongsan conducts destructive weather training throughout the year to prepare for any type of situation.
