DoDEA Pacific accepting applications for Sure Start program
OKINAWA, Japan — DoDEA Pacific is accepting applications for children of eligible service members, E1 to E4, for a comprehensive pre-kindergarten program called Sure Start. From the earliest age, children need to be exposed to rich experiences in language and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, technology, and physical education so that maximum advantage can be made of the “windows of opportunity” for learning, as described by brain research. The program helps children overcome potential health, financial and educational barriers that may interfere with their academic success.
DoDEA Pacific believes that with a sure start, military-connected children can develop the social, emotional and academic foundations for lifelong learning and career success. The Sure Start preschool program is based on the premise that children’s potential for learning is influenced by their early cultural, physical, social, emotional, linguistic, creative, and cognitive experiences.
Sure Start is an exemplary, research-based preschool program that serves eligible military-connected children living overseas. Sure Start’s foremost responsibility is to eligible children who turn 4 by 1 Sept. of the enrolling school year (e.g. 1 Sept. 2013 for enrolling anytime during the 2013-14 school year). Priority enrollment is for the children of Servicemembers whose rank is Enlisted (E) E1 to E4. Any sponsor in the rank of E5 to E9 who wishes to apply for the program is eligible to do so with the understanding that first priority is given to those children whose sponsor is in the E1 to E4 rank.
Sure Start is not a daycare program. Rather, it offers a comprehensive approach for preschool children, targets preschoolers because of economic circumstance, health issues and/or family factors including the following: low birth weight; parent did not graduate high school; parent whose primary language is not English; single parent; parent who was a teenager when first child was born; remote assignments/long deployments; three or more siblings close in age; or sibling with a severe disability.
