OKINAWA, Japan — Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific joins the nation and U.S. military communities around the world in celebrating April as Month of the Military Child. Throughout the month of April DoDEA Pacific teachers, faculty, students and parents are appearing in public service announcements on American Forces Network throughout the Pacific. Each PSA is accompanied by a full interview on the DoDEA Pacific Web site: http://www.dodea.edu/Pacific/MilitaryKids2014.cfm

Additionally, everyone is invited to “Purple Up!” on April 30 in support of an annual campaign created four years ago by Operation Military Kids (OMK). OMK is an organization dedicated to military children. During the month of April they encourage community awareness and support of military children.

DoDEA Pacific encourages participation on April 30 as a visible way to show support to and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. OMK chose purple because it symbolizes all branches of the military; purple is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue.

Today, DoDEA Pacific’s 50 schools serve over 23,500 children of U.S. military and eligible DoD civilian personnel families stationed throughout the Pacific theater. The DoDEA Pacific teaching, administrative and school support team includes more than 3,300 full-time professionals. The schools are geographically organized into four districts: Guam, Japan, Okinawa and South Korea.
