CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – Sometimes, a football coach’s best asset may be hiding in plain sight.

In Aaron Mundy’s case, that was Tyreke Slaughter, a junior quarterback who took to the air on Friday, throwing for four touchdowns as Humphreys pulled even at 3-3 with a 34-0 shutout of winless Osan at Blackhawks Field.

Tyreke had a phenomenal night. He’s a gifted young man,” Mundy said, adding he had been coaching Slaughter “wrong. I was not playing to his strengths. He can throw, but he’s not the prototypical pocket passer. He’s an athletic quarterback and we weren’t capitalizing on that.”

laughter finished 7-for-14 for 267 yards, throwing three touchdowns to Dai’Quan Wilson and one to Carlos Hernandez. Wilson caught three passes for 167 yards and Hernandez two for 40.

undy credited the play of tackles Tahjai Edney and Jimmy Scoggins, guards John Burger and Rickey Chipps and center Jameson Vi, calling his offensive line “the difference in the game.”

Edney, in particular, was called on to play a position new to him; he’s a freshman skills-position player whom Mundy said is the second-fastest on the team. “We needed him to step up and play tackle and he did a nice job for us,” Mundy said.

Coupled with Slaughter’s big strikes, five turnovers proved to be the undoing of the Cougars (0-6).

“Big plays killed us again,” coach Don Tusha said, adding the Cougars were “really thin,” down three players with concussions and losing three more to injuries during the game.

Osan is due to play at Seoul American next Friday in both teams’ season finales, but “we may not have enough to play.” Humphreys finishes its regular season Friday at Daegu.
