The heart, desire, dedication, commitment and hard work are all there, coach Aaron Mundy said following Humphreys’ first victory as a varsity football team.

“It’s the football knowledge we need to work on,” he said after the Blackhawks shut out Osan 27-0 on Friday on their home field, improving to 1-1 on the season and dropping the Cougars to 0-2.

Mundy was referring to penalties – more than 200 yards’ worth in the second quarter alone. “I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. Many of the fouls involved things like blocks in the back and below the waist in the open field, holding penalties, hitting the center on a punt snap and others of that nature, Mundy said. Three touchdowns were called back due to penalties.

“A lot of that is my fault and the coaching staff’s,” Mundy said. “We’re going to be all right. We have the bodies and size. We just have to coach them. We have a lot of kids who just got their 10 practices in and we had to play them. A lot of fun, but incredibly stressful.”

Quarterback Tyreke Slaughter did much of the heavy offensive lifting, throwing three touchdowns on 5-for-9 passing, and rushing nine times for 111 yards. Osie Cruz added 89 yards on three attempts and Dai’Quan Wilson 114 on four tries, including one 72-yard run.

“We have backs with speed if we can get them into the open field,” Mundy said.

It was the second straight week for the Cougars to give up big plays and to also have a scoring play wiped out by an inadvertent whistle. “Rough night,” coach Don Tusha said.

“I never really felt like we were getting beat. Big plays got us again,” Tusha said. “We’ll get them next time.”

Humphreys is at Daegu next Friday while the Cougars have the week off.
