NCO earns distinguished honor graduate award
CAMP HUMPHREYS, Republic of Korea -- There are several ways Soldiers can stand out from their peers. One way is to earn top honors with the highest academic average in a course.
Staff Sgt. Mhalyn Nanquil, formally of the 348th Composite Supply Company, 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 2nd Sustainment Brigade, now with 304th Signal Battalion, 1st Signal Brigade, 8th Army, and Distinguished Honor Graduate at the Army Career Counselors Course. She completed the course with a 98.96 percent grade point average.
"When they said my name, it was surreal to me," said Nanquil. "I wasn't thinking about who was going to be the distinguished honor graduate, I just wanted to do my best."
The Philippine native worked to learn much throughout the course. Nanquil knew that after graduation her true work would begin, and there would be no room for error. Soldiers deserve the best.
Becoming a career counselor has been a goal for Nanquill since she saw a career counselor in action in 2014.
"My career counselor in Colorado is the one who got me started," said Nanquil. "She showed me what she could do and I actually fell in love with the job."
A year after she realized her passion, she began completing her packet to reclassify from an automated logistical specialist to a career counselor.
However, once she began the process, she received orders assigning her to the 2nd Infantry Division here.
According to Nanquil, the permanent change of station did not deter her.
Nanquil never gave up. When she arrived to 2ID, she went to the retention office looking for guidance. Her unit retention helped her complete and submit the packet to earn a chance at becoming a career counselor.
"Staff Sgt. Naquil's determination to give Soldiers her best demonstrates her ability and motivation to live by the Army Values on a daily basis," said Capt. Sasha-Al Lee, commander, 348th Composite Supply Company, 194th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 2SBDE.
