Camp Humphreys honors fallen heroes through Strong B.A.N.D.S. campaign
CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea -- In support of May's National Physical Fitness and Sports month, the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Installation Management Command has committed in promoting healthy lifestyles through the Strong B.A.N.D.S (Balance, Activity Nutrition, Determination, and Strength) campaign.
Camp Humphreys, along with multiple Army installations worldwide, are getting involved to support the initiative.
Humphreys' Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Sports Fitness and Aquatics will host a myriad of programs and activities throughout the month of May to energize and inspire the community to live a healthy lifestyle while fostering camaraderie, cohesiveness, and a sense of total community.
Alyssa Pates, Collier Community Fitness Center fitness coordinator and Strong B.A.N.D.S. event planner, expressed the importance of the campaign.
"It is essential for the community to know how important it is not only for the Soldier, but for the families to stay physically and mentally fit as well.
"My expectations for this campaign is to create a sense of awareness to the community," said Pates. "Bringing people together with ample, some, or no fitness experience and getting them excited to be active."
In honor of a fallen hero, U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, who was the first Navy member to receive the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, Collier Community Fitness Center will host a "Murph" workout event, May 25, from 8 a.m. to noon. The workout will consists a one mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 squats. Although not required, Humphreys Strong B.A.N.D.S. will add in one additional mile to the run, in tribute to the cause.
"This event symbolizes Strong B.A.N.D.S. well, because the 'Murph' isn't about competing or crushing the workout," said Pates. "It serves as a taste of discomfort and intensity, a lot like Michael Murphy endured during his time in theater. It allows the community to come together to cheer for another, get through the workout one rep at a time together, and to remember our fallen heroes."
Everyone is welcome to participate in the event and encouraged to bring their combat boots, to line the field outside of Collier. This will symbolize our fallen heroes, and also to cheer for the participants as they complete their run.
