When a local festival run allegedly run by gangsters was nominated as the best festival in Busan, experts are questioning the validity of the festivals and whether there have been loopholes in the management of it.

According to city of Busan, the City Festival Promotion Committee opened up a committee last month and selected Buk district’s Nakdong River Gupo Naru Festival as the city’s best out of a total of 37 local festivals in the city.

The festival picked as best receives 45 million won worth of support fund from the city according the city’s festival promotion ordinance.

The Gupo Naru Festival has since been under investigation by the police for several allegations including suspicion of gangsters shaking down some 158 million won from street vendors participating in the festival.
