DAEGU, South Korea — The 2015 tax filing season is upon us. The Area IV Tax Centers will provide free taxpreparation and electronic filing services at Camp Henry and Camp Carroll locations from Feb. 1 through April 18. The Camp Henry Tax Center will remain open through June 17.

The A rea I V Tax Centers provide active duty personnel, retirees and their dependents, and DoD civilians in Korea free tax preparation and filing from IRS trained and certified preparers. Contractors whose employment contracts authorize receipt of legal assistance are also eligible for free tax preparation.

Both the Camp Henry and Camp Carroll Tax Centers will open the first week in February. Beginning Jan. 25, filers may call to schedule an appointment: Camp Henry Tax Center 768-9038 (0503-368-9038) and the Camp Carroll Tax Center at 765-7824 (0503-365-7824).

Maj. Alma Whitelaw, Judge Advocate, Tax Center officer in charge, stated each center will be staffed by command-selected personnel from units across Area IV. A number of the personnel who will be preparing returns have previous experience preparing tax returns, and all preparers have been trained to look for every deduction, credit and adjustment to minimize a taxpayer’s tax liability.

“Our preparers are eager to start the tax season. They have been trained and certified at the advanced tax preparer level. Each preparer also received certification in military and health savings account specialty courses,” said Whitelaw.

White law stated tax returns may only be completed with the taxpayer(s) present. Persons filing joint returns must ensure their spouse will be present or have a valid power of attorney for tax preparation from the spouse. Filers must have all relevant documents prior to coming to the tax center. These documents include last year’s tax return, an official photo ID of for each taxpayer, a Social Security card for each payer and dependent, and a cancelled check or bank statement for direct deposit. Filers need to ensure they bring all W-2, 1099, 1098, and 1095 forms to their appointment, as well as any statements received for mortgages, interest, and tuition.

In addition to required documents, Whitelaw advises filers to bring receipts for charitable contributions, education expenses and unreimbursed travel expenses.

“ Bring any receipt that you think may be deductible,” she said. “Unreimbursed expenses from your permanent change of station (PCS) to Korea may be deductible, as well as certain other expenses.”

The tax centers will primarily operate on an appointment basis. All complex returns will require an appointment at the Camp Henry Tax Center. Complex returns include those with capital gains and losses, rental properties and detailed itemized deductions. While walk-in appointments will be available for simple returns and 1040 EZ filers, the Camp Henry Tax Center Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge, Staff Sgt. Michael Parker, recommends that customers call ahead to determine their wait time.

We w ill assist any walk-in customer on a first-come, first serve basis, said Parker. The Camp Carroll tax center is located in the MSC-K building, S-388, Room 140, on Camp Carroll across the street from the Lodge. The Camp Carroll tax center will prepare simple returns only. This center will be open 1000-1800 Monday-Friday. The center will take walk-ins until 30 minutes before closing time.

Preparers at the Camp Henry tax center will prepare both complex and simple tax returns. The Camp Henry tax center is located in Building 1805 next to Gate 1. The center will be open 1000-1800 Monday – Friday. For the month of February, the center will be open until 1900 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for scheduled appointments. The center will take walkins until 30 minutes before closing time
