A dive into Korean culture and cuisine
SHINJANG, Republic of Korea -- The 51st Medical Group Health Promotion section and Osan’s American Red Cross team have partnered to create the 4/9 Market Guide, a guide to buying Korean produce in the local area.
Known as the “Songbuk Market” to the local civilians, and the “4/9 Market” to the base community, the open air market offers options for healthy eating.
The guide was designed to help make the transition to Korean produce easier and to promote the consumption of local, seasonal foods. The guide also offers information about the market, nutrition for a healthier lifestyle, and foods that are commonly seen in the market.
“By providing this guide I hope to eliminate some of the barriers in learning to identify new produce items and to offer suggestions on how to prepare them,” said Lisa Roof, 51st MDG health promotion coordinator. “It’s my hope that readers increase their daily consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and that they will explore the variety of plant foods that Korea has to offer.”
The Airman and Family Readiness center has also partnered with the creators of the guide by offering to host a monthly guided tour of the 4/9 Market for all those interested in exploring the market.
“My job is to introduce the Korean culture to anyone stationed at Osan,” said Tokhui Kim, 51st Force Support Squadron’s AFRC multi-cultural awareness program coordinator.
Kim has been hosting cultural tours at Osan for approximately 14 years and has recently become the lead guide for the 4/9 Market tour.
“The 4/9 Market tour introduces the base community to local outdoor shopping and familiarizes participants with the products sold in the market,” said Kim. “During the tour, I discuss the various bakery items, snacks, money exchanges, restaurants and more while walking through the market with guests.”
