The United Service Organizations Humphreys brought everyone together on October 28 for a special Day of the Deployed BBQ, celebrating brave service members in partnership with KORUS, a local non-profit led by Korean high school students.
The event at USO Humphreys Sentry Village honored the enduring U.S.–Republic of Korea alliance on a day set aside to recognize those currently serving far from home. The grill sizzled with juicy hamburgers and hot dogs as the center filled with smiles, laughter, and connection. But the highlight came in the form of a heartfelt surprise.
USO Humphreys proudly partnered with KORUS to distribute appreciation gift boxes, honoring the dedication and sacrifices of those who serve. Each attendee was greeted by Youngmoo “Mark” Lee, founder of KORUS, who presented them with a carefully prepared gift box. Inside were tokens of appreciation: a handwritten letter thanking recipients for their service, a
traditional Korean fan, a pair of socks, and a ROK–U.S. flag lapel pin symbolizing the unity between the two nations.

KORUS, short for Korea–U.S. alliance, was founded to express gratitude to Korean War veterans and to strengthen ties between younger generations of Koreans and their American allies. The group recently extended its efforts beyond Camp Humphreys, donating gift boxes to 70 ROK and U.S. service members who completed the demanding Mangudai training challenge at Camp Casey on November 5. After days of grueling physical and mental trials, participants were met at dawn with a freshly prepared pancake breakfast, coffee, orange juice, and KORUS gift boxes to recognize their resilience and teamwork.

For USO Humphreys, partnerships like this are central to its mission of supporting service members around the globe. Collaborating with community organizations not only enhances morale but also strengthens the human connections that sustain the U.S.–ROK alliance.
More than 70 years after the Korean War, the bond between the United States and the Republic of Korea remains a cornerstone of peace and security in the region. Over 36,000 American troops gave their lives during the conflict, and countless others were forever changed. Their courage helped transform South Korea from a war-torn nation into one of the world’s most vibrant democracies and a strong ally.
The USO continues to support service members and their families wherever they are stationed around the world with the help of our individual donors, sponsors, and partner organizations.
