A magazine that recognizes military spouses has opened nominations for its annual Military Spouse of the Year awards.

Military Spouse magazine began accepting nominations Jan. 5, officials said.

The nomination period is open until Jan. 16.

In its eighth year, the competition will help name the 2015 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year. It is open to spouses from all service branches.

The award "recognizes the force behind our nation's service members," officials said in a news release.

"Military Spouses make a difference every day, from serving as single parents and heads of households when spouses are deployed to advocating for their communities, volunteering their time and talents to charitable causes, and leading change. In every way, these men and women are making important contributions to America and its protection and defense," officials said.

Candidates will be narrowed down by military post. Finalists from each post will then go head to head in online voting in February.

A third and final voting round will be in March. The Military Spouse of the Year will be named May 8.
