My VSG journey at H+ Yangji Hospital in Korea

For as long as I can remember, I have had a very complicated relationship with my weight and eating habits. From fourth grade onward I dealt with gaining and trying to lose weight, sometimes successfully, most times not. As my lifestyle became increasingly sedentary, I gained significant amounts of weight in adulthood and found it not only difficult to lose, but also to keep the weight off. COVID also made things worse as I found myself consuming large amounts of high calorie, unhealthy foods regularly for a good 6 months in 2020. My lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits lead to me reaching my highest weight of 281 pounds.

Oddly enough, a dream I had in the fall of 2020 inspired me to look into weight loss surgery as a tool to get my health back on track. In October 2020, after doing extensive research, I called H+ Yangji Hospital to learn more about the vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure. Dr. Yoona Chung answered all of my questions thoroughly in our phone call and recommended that I come in for a consultation. In my consultation I met with the surgeon Dr. Yongjin Kim, and talked about the history of my diet and eating habits and he let me know in simple and kind terms what my options were, what his recommendation was and what the aftermath of this surgery would look like. He answered my questions in great detail and I felt I had all the information that I needed. I left the consultation with the date of my surgery booked. Before I left I also met with a nutritionist who provided me with portion control and macronutrient recommendations, as well as an outline of pre and post-op meal guidelines to follow.

A month before the surgery I got my blood work and full in-body check done. I left well-educated on the state of my health as well as what my post-op goals would be. On January 6, 2021, I received the vertical sleeve gastrectomy operation. Thanks to the capable hands of Dr. Kim, the surgery went well and I received exceptional post-operative care at H+ Yangji Hospital with minimal pain and discomfort afterwards. The nurses were attentive to any requests I had for pain relief and I was encouraged to take slow walks around the floor to prevent blood clots and help ease gassiness. I practiced sipping water while in the hospital and two days later I was discharged. My life has been drastically different ever since.

At the time of writing this, a little 6 months after my operation, I have lost 80 pounds and am down nearly 3 dress sizes. I have more energy, I sleep better, concerns about my blood sugar levels are gone, and I can comfortably do more physical activities. I have gotten used to my new pattern of eating and for the first time in a very long time I don’t feel like I’m on a diet. I just make the best food choices for myself now. I have no regrets! In fact, my only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner. My journey has only just started, and I am so happy with how far I’ve come. I’m eternally grateful to the doctors and nurses who made this all possible for me.
