USAG YONGSAN — Newcomers to U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan and Area II enjoyed getting accustomed to Korean culture Aug. 30, through the Area II Army Community Services (ACS) Newcomers Orientation. The program offers a tour of both the garrison and nearby destinations.

The tour briefs newcomers on a broad outline of the garrison and provides opportunities to familiarize themselves with Korean food and history. The program is specifically designed for family members of U.S. Soldiers stationed in South Korea.

The tour began with the newcomers collecting information from various booths displayed in the ACS building, such as the American Red Cross, Community Bank, and Seoul American High School. The newcomers were then provided a guided bus tour to several facilities on post including the gas station and the 121 Brian Allgood Army Community Hospital.

Off post, the group then proceeded to Namsan Hanok Village. The traditional village is a popular spot for foreign visitors to see how Koreans lived many years ago. The group also viewed a demonstration of how to make kimchi. Children in the newcomers group learned to play the traditional Korean game “Tuho,” which involves throwing sticks from a set distance into a narrow canister.

The tour concluded shortly after lunch in the Myeongdong area. Myeongdong is another popular spot for foreign visitors for both shopping and eating. The newcomers group dined at the “Jayeon Byelgok” restaurant, enjoying a variety of Korean foods.

Area II Newcomers Orientation tours are provided by ACS every month. Contact ACS for more information at 738-7505.
