On Camp Casey in Dongducheon March 6, students from Shinhan University report for the first day of a new program under which they'll gain learning experience on U.S. Army camps in Area I.

Six students are enrolled in the newly established U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I Practicum Experience Program.

The program runs in six-month semesters and affords students a chance to learn practical skills in a professional environment under the supervision and mentorship of garrison staff.

One student each has been assigned this semester to the financial management, marketing, sports and fitness, outdoor recreation, planning and analysis, and public affairs sections of the garrison.

The students' first week calls for background briefings and instructional sessions on a variety of topics, among them tips on how to function in an English-speaking, American-style professional environment, military abbreviations, and how to use the bus system on Area I camps.

Part of the first day included a bus tour of key spots on Camp Casey, among them the Carey Physical Fitness Center, USO, the golf course and Warrior's Club.

To give students a chance to meet those who'll be their mentors during the semester, time was also set aside on the first day for pizza and bowling at Camp Casey's Buccaneer Bowling Center.

Among garrison senior leaders who spent time with the students at the bowling center were Col. Brandon D. Newton, Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael L. Berry, the garrison's senior enlisted leader, Steven J. Ryan, the garrison's Deputy to the Garrison Commander, and Lt. Col. Jon R. Gardner, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Casey.
