With high prices expected to continue into the new year, Korea’s major hypermarkets are rolling out aggressive discount strategies aimed at reducing everyday grocery costs.

Rather than competing only on flashy promotions, the focus this time is on practical ways shoppers can save money through timing, memberships, and online platforms.

One of the biggest savings opportunities comes from online grocery shopping.

Lotte Mart is pushing its ZETTA platform with daily limited time deals, heavily discounted seasonal fruit, and half price offers on premium items like abalone. Shoppers who use the app regularly can stack savings by combining daily specials with subscription benefits through Zetta Pass, which adds extra discounts on meal kits and select items. For frequent online shoppers, this kind of subscription model offers consistent savings over one off sales.

Bulk buying and simple meal planning also help cut costs. Emart is targeting households looking to stock up on protein, offering broad discounts on beef, pork, and chicken across multiple cuts. Buying larger packs or multi item deals, especially on marinated or ready to cook meat, can significantly lower the cost per meal, making it easier to plan affordable home cooked meals for the week.

Homeplus is leaning into value focused shopping through its Clean Food Festa, which highlights fresh produce and basic ingredients at reduced prices. Seasonal fruit, imported beef cuts, and Jeju sourced produce are priced well below typical retail levels. Families can also save by watching for 1 plus 1 deals on snacks and frozen foods during school holidays, reducing the cost of everyday essentials rather than luxury items.

Across all three retailers, the common money saving themes are clear. Shop seasonal items when supply is high, use store apps and memberships to unlock extra discounts, and focus on staples rather than impulse purchases.

For shoppers willing to plan ahead and compare platforms, these early year promotions offer real opportunities to stretch the grocery budget without sacrificing quality.
