USAG YONGSAN — Service members from the Republic of Korea and the U.S. attended the Korean Foreigners Friendship Cultural Society’s (KFFCS) Friendship Cultural Orientation Program Sept. 20-22, in Busan.

Service members from all over Korea had the chance to apply for the free Program to learn about Korean history and culture. The attendees visited attractions like the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Haeundae Beach, Geoga Bridge and Geojedo Park, which used to be a P.O.W. Camp before the armistice agreement was signed.

This Good Neighbor Program activity encouraged attendees from the U.S. and Korea to get to know each other, learn more about one another’s cultures and culminated in a welcome dinner at the Millennium Hilton Hotel in Seoul. Both groups enjoyed the program, in particular the Koreans who had actually never visited Busan in the past. Visiting the P.O.W. camp was also a new experience, said one ROK Soldier. Service members from the U.S. learned more about the country in which they are stationed.

In addition to visiting historical and cultural monuments, service members appreciated long conversations about the similarities and differences between the ROK and U.S. military, as well as their respective cultures.

ROK service members had to be referred by their commanders, while U.S. service members had to sign up for a limited number of seats. The duty uniform was Class A. The KFFCS hosts three Friendship Cultural Orientation Programs a year to different destinations around the Korean peninsula.
