On Camp Casey in Dongducheon March 5, the U.S. Army welcomes students from local Shinhan University to the start of a new semester of the Practicum Experience Program.

The semester lasts six months and affords students a chance to gain practical skills and experience in a professional work environment on U.S. Army camps in Area I and Area II.

Seven students are enrolled in this semester, which is the third since the Practicum program started last year.

The program places students in garrison offices whose focus best matches their degree programs.

Among assignments this semester are those to public works, marketing, information management, and to the public affairs offices of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan in Seoul and the 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-US Combined Division on Camp Red Cloud in Uijeongbu.

The first week is devoted to an orientation covering such topics as proper workplace attire, how to use the on-post shuttle bus system, an introduction to U.S. military culture, and how to adapt to an English-speaking workplace.

Among Area I and Area II senior leaders welcoming the students was Lt. Col. Brian A. Jacobs, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Casey, and Command Sgt. Maj. Jason R. Copeland, the garrison's senior enlisted leader.

Jacobs encouraged the students to make the most of the program's chances to develop professionally and personally.

There was also a bus tour of Camp Casey and adjoining Camp Hovey, with stops at several fitness centers.

Capping the day was a social "ice-breaker" at Camp Casey's Gateway Club at which students met their assigned mentors and were further welcomed by other senior leaders, including Col. Brandon D. Newton, Commander, USAG Area I, and Steven J. Ryan, Deputy to the Garrison Commander, USAG Red Cloud/Area I and USAG Yongsan/Area II.

Ryan established the Practicum Program last year and its first semester opened March 2017.
