Task Force Smith Commemoration

by Eighth Army
U.S. Army

Lt. Col. Matthew Walker and Command Sgt. Major Gene Harding, commander and command sergeant major, respectively, of 6th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 35th ADA Brigade, place flowers at the Task Force Smith Memorial in Osan, South Korea, July 6, to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the first battle of the war involving U.S. Soldiers. TF Smith, comprised of a makeshift battalion of the U.S. 24th Division, was sent to South Korea to delay the advance of North Korean forces. Inexperienced, understrength and ill-equipped, TF Smith sustained 60 killed, 21 wounded, and 82 captured, during its battle against North Korean forces. Nonetheless, TF Smith delayed the North's advance and reinforcements were eventually able to repel the invasion.
