USO Osan celebrates National Volunteer Week

This week, 19 April - 25 April 2020, is National Volunteer Week. For the past 46 years, during the month of April, the U.S. has celebrated National Volunteer Week to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers across the country and on American military bases around the world. During this week, the President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is normally presented to qualifying volunteers. This award is based on age and hours volunteered within a 12-month period. There are four levels of this award: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Lifetime Achievement.

Typically, USO Osan would participate in a base wide ceremony to honor the dedicated volunteers of Osan Air Base. Unfortunately, due to the current conditions, this type of event cannot take place. Instead, USO staff wrote handwritten “Thank you” cards to each of the 83 active USO Osan volunteers and presented awards to each person individually.

However, the USO still wanted to make an effort to recognize USO Osan volunteers in a public manner. With that being said, it is our honor to announce the USO Osan PVSA winners for the 2019 calendar year.

Gold award recipients include: DeeAnn Thomas (596 hours) and Manuel Villarreal (1,496 hours).

Silver award recipients include Julie Fleming (198 hours), AnnaLee Vinson (382 hours), and Jim White (450 hours).

Bronze award recipients include Matthew Bradford (150 hours), Dana Cavazos (149 hours), Cynthia Diaz (137 hours), James Hagler (137 hours), Christopher Lansville (160 hours), Melissa Maskulka (111 hours), Ron Pierre (129 hours), and James Thammavongsa (142 hours).

We would also like to recognize our USO Osan Volunteer of the Month recipients, Volunteer of the Quarter recipients, and USO Mission Award recipients.

Volunteers of the month included Christopher Lansville (June 2019), Manuel Villarreal (July 2019), Ron Pierre (August 2019), Cynthia Diaz (September2019), Cody Cohoon (October 2019), Dana Cavazos (November 2019), Steele Cary (December 2019), Dildanges "Dee" Sumang (January 2020), Dominique “Dom" Labo (February 2020), Zephren Huggins (March 2020), and Jessica McCollum (April 2020).

Volunteers of the Quarter have included Manuel Villarreal (Summer 2019), James Hagler (Fall 2019), Dana Cavazos (Winter 2019) and Zephren Huggins (Spring 2020). Dana Cavazos was also selected as the USO Pacific Volunteer of the Quarter (for the entire Pacific region) during Winter 2019

Lastly, USO Mission Awards are presented to those who have made a noteworthy contribution to local operations, those who have gone above and beyond by putting the USO mission first, and made a significant, superlative, and unique contribution to the USO mission.

Bronze Mission Award recipients include Christopher Lansville (August 2019), Matthew Bradford (August 2019), Jim White (August 2019), Julie Fleming (August 2019), Joshua Hicks (August 2019), Paul Browne (February 2020), Zephren Huggins (January 2020), and Keith MacDougall (January 2020).

Gold Mission Award recipient include Dominique “Dom” Labo (March 2020).

We are extremely proud of these fine people, and all our volunteers. We can’t thank them enough for their selfless service to our military community during the past year. We hope all USO Osan volunteers will also receive thanks and recognition from the community they have served. The spirit of volunteer service has been alive and well at USO Osan and continues to thrive despite current circumstances. We would not have been able to perform our mission without our dedicated volunteers.
