DoDEA Pacific’s Matthew C. Perry HS team, student receive prestigious awards
OKINAWA, Japan – Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific’s M.C. Perry High School Samurai soccer team and MVP Isaac Lewis received National recognition and awards at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America 2017 Convention in Los Angeles, Calif., held Jan. 11-15.
The Matthew Perry High School boys’ soccer team was recognized nationally for the Spring 2016 Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award and the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of American Convention High School Team Academic Award in Los Angeles for fair play, sporting behavior and a combined team 3.55 GPA.
The Team Ethics and Sports Award recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game including no red cards during the season. The Team Academic Award recognizes commitment to excellence in the classroom for the entire academic year with a composite team GPA of at least 3.25.
“We, as a program, believe that our athletes are students first and foremost, so much emphasis is placed on this, above and beyond soccer,” said Mark Lange, M.C. Perry soccer coach. “This is part of our culture for the Samurai soccer program.”
Isaac Lewis was recognized as a 2016 NSCAA Scholar All-American, the fourth M.C. Perry HS student-athlete to receive the award. Coach Lange nominated Lewis who met the award requirements of a GPA higher than 3.75, excelled in high school soccer and participated in community service.
"It was an honor to represent DoDEA schools at the convention,” said Lewis, who attends Ganzaga University in Spokane, Wash. “I think it’s important for DoDEA student-athletes to realize that we can be competitive against the top players in the United States, and that our intercultural experiences give us an edge not only on the soccer field, but also in the global arena."
Isaac Lewis was nominated because he was an integral part of a M.C. Perry HS Samurai team that won four-straight Division II Far East titles. “Isaac was the defensive MVP at the tournament the last 2 years and was also the school valedictorian, finishing his high school career with a cumulative GPA of 4.26,” said Lange, who has been with DoDEA for 15 years.
Matthew C. Perry High School Principal Lorenzo Brown said Isaac is truly deserving of this selection and, “is an amazing scholar athlete who embodies the Samurai Spirit both in the classroom and on the pitch. I could not think of a more deserving representative of Matthew C. Perry HS.”
