DoDEA Pacific hosts 2016/17 Far East Culinary Arts competition

OKINAWA, Japan – Thirty five Department of Defense Education Activity Pacific Far East students representing nine school teams from Japan, Okinawa and South Korea participated in the Far East Culinary Arts Competition Feb. 2 at the Taiyo Community Center on Yokota Air Base.

The culinary competition demonstrated each team’s knowledge, skills, and creative abilities as they prepared a three-course meal using only two butane burners. Culinary professionals judged teams on their knife skills, teamwork, sanitation, menu presentation, and taste.

The Yokota HS team, Catherine Funk, Sidney McDonough, Megan Boyll and Trinitie Clark, worked together to place first in the competition. Their winning menu began with a Cajun fried chicken over beet waffle appetizer; Cajun pork tenderloin with curly carrots, and pan fried spinach and bacon entrée; and ended with a peach fritter with honey caramel bourbon sauce.

Clark, a junior, has been a part of the culinary program for 2 years and said the program, “builds character and gives students a look at what they will have to face after college if pursuing a career in cooking.”

Kinnick HS and Zama American HS placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. The top 3 winning teams received $6,000 scholarships to the New England Culinary Institute located in Montpelier, Vermont. Additionally, the first place team members each received a $3,000 scholarship (annually renewable) to The Art Institute. There are 27 allocations nationally.

And finally, Yokota HS is eligible to participate in the National Prostart® Invitational competition April 28-30 in Charleston, SC.

The Far East Culinary Arts Competition extends and enhances DoDEA’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program by providing students an opportunity to demonstrate college and career readiness skills and habits.

The National ProStart Invitational® is the country’s premier high school competition focused on restaurant management and culinary arts. The 14th Annual National ProStart Invitational® will bring together the top ProStart® students in the Nation April 28-30 to showcase their talent, passion and skill in Charleston, SC. The winning teams will take home $1.4 million in scholarship funds.
