Kinnick team wins 2018 History Bowl Championship
OKINAWA, Japan – Nile C. Kinnick High School’s History Bowl team won the 2018 Japan History Bowl Championship on Saturday in the varsity division held at the British School in Tokyo, Japan.
Kinnick students Ryan Posthumus, Daniel Posthumus, and Lance Pescoso participated in 40-minute matches between teams throughout various parts of Asia answering questions pertaining to world history.
“These are grueling and comprehensive history questions ranging from North American to medieval and modern European history,” said Alex Mauldin, Kinnick English Language teacher and History Bowl coach. “Our boys went 6-1, beating all of the other varsity teams at least once, including last year’s champions.”
The victory came with significant preparation and sufficient pre-competition nervousness that dissipated once it started.
“DoDEA treats our learning as an active process of discovery where they cultivate curiosity, perseverance, and the desire to learn beyond what is offered in classrooms,” said Daniel Posthumus, Kinnick student. “Additionally, we also gain the confidence to confront such challenges as the History Bowl and perform at our best.”
Coming out on top in an event like this demonstrates the team’s mastery over a wide range of history.
“Our aim is to challenge and prepare students to maximize their academic growth and well-being for college, career, and life,” said Jacqueline Ferguson, Kinnick principal. “Furthermore, we are always seeking to partner with internal and external stakeholders, such as the International History Bowl, to advance student success.”
Saturday’s win makes the team eligible to take part in the Asian Championships scheduled to be held in Thailand in June. Additionally, the team is eligible for the International History Olympics held in Germany in July.
