The Busan Agricultural Technology Center will host a tasting event on August 4 to introduce new dishes created with Hwanggeum Yechan, a locally developed rice variety that the city hopes will become a signature regional food product.
The event will be held at Chef Gon Restaurant in Jung-gu and will bring together food industry professionals, farmers, researchers, distributors, and consumers to sample and evaluate a range of menu items.
Six dishes and products have been developed using Hwanggeum Yechan, including salads, seasoned rice, traditional rice liquor, and two varieties of rice-based ice cream.
Participants will assess the flavor, texture, presentation, and commercial potential of each item.
Hwanggeum Yechan was jointly developed by the National Institute of Crop Science and the Busan Agricultural Technology Center beginning in 2023.
The variety is already supplied to schools through contract farming, and the city is now exploring its use in restaurants and dessert products.
Feedback from the tasting event will be used to refine recipes before they are introduced to local restaurants and other commercial outlets.
