CATV Transition Planned for November 1
DALLAS – The Army and Family MWR will transition management of on-base Cable TV (CATV) services in Korea to the Army & Air Force Exchange Service and its business partner LG U+ on 1 November. The change is being made to comply with the Congressional National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and IMCOM ACSIM policy.
LG U+ will begin providing AFN on that date in the first phase of the transition. All channels will be the same and no set top box will be required for on-base service. Viewers should make sure the CATV coax is connected directly to their TV sets, and then re-scan the channels. Off-base AFN viewers using satellite dishes are not affected by this transition and no actions are required.
Premium TV will be in the second phase. MWR-provided basic and premium services will cease on 31 October, and there will be a gap in service until the launch of a new premium service from LG U+. The Exchange and LG U+ have placed a very high priority on launching the new premium service, but are unable to provide an exact date at this time.
Hulu can be an attractive option for many viewers in the interim. Hulu offers programs from ABC/Disney, NBC, Fox and the CW, and is available to on-base LG U+ Internet subscribers. Hulu has a free (www.hulu.com) and a premium service. The Exchange has negotiated an exclusive customer discount of 10%/month (off reg. $7.99/month price) for the premium service with the first month free ‒ if people sign up through www.shopmyexchange.com/hulu.
Effective with the transition, LG U+ will also assume responsibility for maintaining the coax and network equipment required for residential telecom services (Internet, TV, Phone). Military Support services had previously handled this. Command has authorized a $5/month maintenance fee for LG U+ Internet customers to cover these costs, also effective 1 November.
LG U+, which already serves the U.S. military community through Exchange contracts for high-speed internet and mobile communications, has plans to invest in technical infrastructure upgrades that will pave the way for future digital features.
