Gimhae, known as the birthplace of “back meat,” will once again celebrate its signature dish with the 2nd Gimhae Doit Back Meat Street Festival on November 1 and 2.

The event will take place at the Sujeong parking lot in Buwon-dong and along the adjacent street whichis home to many of the city’s famous back meat restaurants.

Back meat, or ddeutgogi, has long been part of Gimhae’s local identity. The dish is said to have originated in the 1980s when butchers and customers would enjoy leftover cuts of pork through the “back door.”

What started as a humble meal quickly gained popularity for being both affordable and flavorful. As Gyeongnam’s largest pig-farming city, Gimhae continues to embrace this culinary tradition.

Launched last year by the Buwon-dong Residents’ Autonomous Association, the festival aims to revitalize local markets and strengthen community pride.

The first event drew about 4,000 visitors over two days, and this year’s edition promises an even livelier atmosphere.

Festival hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the first day and until 8 p.m. on the second. The opening ceremony will be held at 6:00 pm on November 1.

Visitors can enjoy cultural performances, a local talent contest, free tastings, and discounted back meat dishes sold at 5,000 won per 120g.

A new addition this year is a reservation-based BBQ zone where participants can grill back meat while learning from local “back meat guides.”

Performances include samulnori, dance sports, and live music by local cultural clubs, as well as guest singers Yeong-gi and Yang Ji-won on the opening night. The second day will feature local and youth bands, traditional drumming, and closing performances by Audrey Girls and Cyber Burger.

Visitors can also participate in the Kikijarang Contest, an open performance competition with no restrictions on genre.

Alongside food stalls, the festival will showcase local art, tourism promotions, and exhibitions celebrating Gimhae’s food culture.
