KFC Korea has officially been acquired by U.S.-based investment firm The Carlyle Group, marking a new chapter for the fast-food chain’s operations in South Korea.
The transaction, first announced late last year, gives Carlyle full ownership of KFC Korea, which currently runs around 200 stores nationwide under franchise rights from Yum! Brands.
With the deal now complete, attention is turning to what comes next for the brand in Korea. Industry expectations point toward a broader expansion of store locations as KFC looks to strengthen its presence in an increasingly crowded quick-service dining market.
KFC remains one of Korea’s longest-established foreign fried chicken brands, but in recent years has faced growing competition from both domestic chicken franchises and global burger chains. The ownership change is expected to bring a renewed focus on store growth, menu development, and updated customer experiences.
Carlyle already has an established presence in Korea’s food retail sector through café chain A Twosome Place, adding to speculation that KFC Korea could see a more aggressive rollout in the months ahead.
