The Seoul Metropolitan Government has launched a special inspection campaign ahead of the Lunar New Year to ensure food safety and prevent illegal practices during the peak holiday season.

The inspections run through February 13 and target foods in high demand during the holiday period, including rice cakes, dumplings, and beef.

Authorities are focusing on manufacturers and sellers at traditional markets, meat retailers, and online shopping platforms.

Particular attention is being paid to beef products, where false or misleading country-of-origin labeling is more likely due to price differences between domestic and imported meat.

Inspectors are also checking for the sale of expired products, unhygienic handling, and deceptive advertising or unregistered sales on online platforms, especially for gift sets and health supplements. Meat products will be tested using DNA analysis to verify their origin.

Violations will result in criminal charges or administrative penalties.

The city is urging residents to report suspected violations, noting that whistleblowers may be eligible for rewards if their information leads to enforcement action.
