Taste of Korea: Delicious choco pies at Jeonju's bakery shop

While many travel destinations are famous for typically one type of dish, there is more than just bibimbap in Jeonju. If you want to eat like a local, table d’hote, bean sprout soup and makgeolli are good options. If you’re obsessed with sweets, Jeonoju has just the thing to cure your sugar cravings — choco pie.

Hand-made choco pie is Jeonju’s regional specialty. The sweets are easily found in almost all the bakeries and even in souvenir shops. But don’t let the choco pie packet that says “handmade” fool you as many of them are produced in factories.

To avoid copycat sweets, head to PNB’s (also known as Pungnyeon Jegwa) main bakery shop or branch stores near Gyeonggijeon Shrine. The bakery opened in the early 1950s and has been passed down three generations.

This bakery’s chocolate pie has strawberry jam or fresh cream in the middle instead marshmallows. You’ll also find a variety of versions from green tea to cheese, cheddar, mocha, cream cheese, and more. Senbei, a Japanese rice cracker, is also one of the best-selling items in this bakery.
