CAMP HUMPHREYS (August 24, 2022) - Brian D. Allgood Army Community Hospital (BDAACH) has become the first hospital in South Korea to join the prestigious Daisy Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. The Daisy Award was created to recognize and honor nurses who provide compassionate care for their patients.

The not-for-profit Daisy Foundation is based in Glen Allen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick dies at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of the DAISY Foundation, “When Patrick was critically ill, out family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind work the nurses at Brian D. Allgood Army Community Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of the DAISY Award.”

Dalia Rivera, a Nursing Supervisor at BDAACH, is one of the DAISY Coordinators who worked tirelessly to bring the DAISY Foundation to the hospital. She states that her “primary motivations to bring the DAISY Award Program to BDAACH are to capture the exceptional work of the nursing staff and facilitate meaningful recognition for the compassionate care they provide to our military community in Korea.”

The Daisy Foundation kickoff will take place at BDAACH on September 14. Nursing staff at other satellite facilities on Camp Humphreys will also be able to take part in nominations. To nominate a nurse on Camp Humphreys, you can click on the Q Code below. Paper nomination forms are also available at the different clinics and at BDAACH.
