OKINAWA, Japan — Individual “Mathletes” Annette Belleman from Edgren Middle/High School and Joshua Lovejoy from Seoul American Middle School earned the opportunity to compete on a national stage after finishing first and fourth respectively in the 2015 Department of Defense Dependents Schools MATHCOUNTS State Competition which concluded March 26.
Edgren M/HS School placed second in the team competition and Seoul American MS finished fourth overall. The students and their teams earned the right to compete and were among 13 schools from DoDEA Europe and Pacific in the state competition.
The fast-paced, multi-round DoDDS State Competition was held virtually, challenging students located in the Pacific and Europe through a variety of conceptual mathematics problems in algebra, geometry and discrete math.
The Edgren M/HS team included Annette Belleman, Kenji Hokoanna, Nevan Narcis, and Breana Nham. The team was coached by Mark VanZweden.
The Seoul American MS team was coached by Sallie Yoon who helped Avery Eun, Daniel Lee, Joshua Lovejoy and Serph Tait prepare for the competition.
The top four individual student finalists from DoDDS move on together as a new team to attend the 2015 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Boston May 7-10.
MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program that is designed to inspire sixth through eighth grade students toward higher academic achievement in mathematics. Furthermore, it encourages students to pursue careers in science, technology and math.
MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. According to a MATHCOUNTS press release, more than 125,000 students representing more than 7,000 schools register annually to participate in MATHCOUNTS programs.

The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that strives to engage middle school students of all ability and interest levels in fun, challenging math programs, in order to expand their academic and professional opportunities. Middle school students exist at a critical juncture in which their love for mathematics must be nurtured, or their fear of mathematics must be overcome. MATHCOUNTS provides students with the kinds of experiences that foster growth and transcend fear to lay a foundation for future success.
