Busan has officially begun the long-awaited redevelopment of the Suyoung Bay Yacht Marina, marking a major step forward for the city’s maritime leisure industry.

The city held a groundbreaking ceremony on November 24 at the yacht marina in Haeundae, with Mayor Park Heong-joon, project developers, and around 200 guests in attendance.

Originally built for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the marina is undergoing its first full-scale renewal since its construction.

The project, first proposed in 2008 and delayed for years due to administrative and legal hurdles, has finally moved ahead after sustained negotiations between the city and developers.

With a project cost of 158.4 billion won based on 2008 figures, the redevelopment will add 567 modern berths, a yacht exhibition hall, a yacht club house, commercial and cultural facilities, and public waterfront spaces.

The city aims to complete construction by late 2027.

Once finished, the upgraded marina is expected to enhance Busan’s status as a global hub for marine leisure, support international yachting events, and offer a vibrant waterfront destination for both residents and visitors.
