Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is transforming its public plaza into a monthly performance venue where residents, musicians, and dancers can step into the spotlight.

The Seoul Design Foundation has launched the DDP Open Stage, a new recurring program that turns DDP’s Oullim Square into a space for community performances and cultural participation.

The initiative aims to give emerging artists a platform to showcase their talents while encouraging the public to become active participants rather than spectators.

Following pilot events earlier this year, including an outdoor swing dance party and live busking performances, the foundation is now recruiting participants for two July programs: Star Busking Night and Citizen Dance Night.

Scheduled for July 15, Star Busking Night will feature emerging musicians and indie artists performing live in the heart of the city. Applications will be accepted from July 1 to 10, with selected performers taking the stage at DDP to connect directly with audiences in an open-air setting.

Citizen Dance Night, set for July 24, will invite members of the public to perform alongside dance crews, hobby groups, families, and solo dancers. Registration will be open from July 1 to 20, creating an opportunity for participants of all skill levels to share the stage.

The DDP Open Stage program officially began in June after a successful launch featuring 16 up-and-coming artists. Organizers say the series builds on the strong public response to earlier community events, including a swing dance festival where visitors joined dance lessons, live music performances, and social dancing.

DDP also plans to host Star Busking Night on the third Wednesday of every month and Citizen Dance Night on the fourth Friday, establishing Oullim Square as a regular destination for community-led performances and cultural events.
