Sacheon City will officially mark the completion of the Gatseom Port redevelopment in Seopo-myeon on March 6, transforming the small fishing harbor through the national “Fishing Village New Deal 300” initiative.

The project, led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, aims to modernize aging fishing villages and stimulate local economies.

Gatseom Port was selected in 2021 and received a total investment of 6.275 billion won, funded by national, provincial, and city budgets. Construction was carried out from November 2023 to December 2025 by the Korea Rural Community Corporation’s Sacheon branch.

Before the upgrade, the port lacked basic infrastructure, making docking difficult during low tide and leaving it vulnerable to typhoon damage. Community spaces and visitor amenities were also limited.

The redevelopment added a breakwater, a bridge connecting fishing grounds, a seaside healing zone, and a renovated village hall. City officials expect safer working conditions for fishermen along with expanded marine tourism opportunities, helping attract visitors and boost local income.
