Seoul has unveiled the “Godeokcheon Lounge,” a new riverside space under Godeokcheon Bridge in Gangdong District, designed as a place where residents can exercise, relax, and enjoy views of the Han River.
The project transforms an underused area beneath the elevated roadway from a simple pass through zone into a more active public waterfront space.
Seoul City and Gangdong District jointly invested about 11.76 billion won to improve the aging bridge underpass environment, upgrade safety, and increase usability for everyday visitors.
Located along the Gangdong Han River Greenway, the site is a key connection point linking Godeokcheon Stream to the Han River.
However, long term construction work, outdated conditions, and mixed pedestrian and bicycle traffic had limited its role as a public riverside area.
The renovated space includes a Han River deck viewing section where visitors can rest after workouts, along with improved cycling routes, bike racks, and bed style benches to support riders and encourage community use.
Running and stretching areas were also added, and pedestrian and bicycle paths were clearly separated to improve safety and comfort.
Seoul hopes the project demonstrates the potential for regenerating old bridge underpass spaces while strengthening the city’s connected waterfront network.
