As Buddha’s Birthday approaches and spring greenery reaches its peak, quiet temple escapes across Gyeongnam are drawing attention as alternative travel destinations for those looking to combine nature, tradition, and reflection.

The Gyeongnam Tourism Foundation has recommended four temple destinations across the province, highlighting lesser-known sites that offer distinctive scenery and a chance to experience local culture beyond the region’s more crowded tourist attractions.

Among the featured sites is Ilbungsa in Uiryeong, known for its massive cave prayer hall, one of the largest of its kind in Korea. Built beneath a towering rock face, the temple offers an unusual landscape that stands out from more traditional temple settings.

Suseonsa in Sancheong, located near Jirisan, is recommended as a quiet retreat for meditation and relaxation, surrounded by pine forests, mountain trails, and streams that create a peaceful natural setting.

Boriam in Namhae, perched high on Geumsan Mountain, remains one of Gyeongnam’s best-known temple destinations, offering panoramic views of the Hallyeohaesang National Park coastline. The temple is also recognized as one of Korea’s three major Avalokitesvara sacred sites.

Cheonggyesa in Hadong rounds out the list, offering a more secluded experience amid forests, bamboo groves, valleys, and nearby green tea fields in the foothills of Jirisan. The temple is also popular for temple stay programs focused on rest and reflection.

In addition to the temple recommendations, the Gyeongnam Tourism Foundation is also promoting seasonal tourism packages tied to Buddha’s Birthday, particularly in Namhae and Hadong, combining temple visits with local culture and regional travel experiences.
