A long-hidden underground space beneath Seoul Plaza is set to reopen this October as a new cultural and entertainment venue centered on immersive K-content experiences.
Seoul City announced that the 335-meter-long underground site, which remained largely unused for nearly 40 years before being opened to the public for exploratory tours in 2023, will be transformed into a large-scale urban culture and experience platform.
Located between Seoul Subway Line 2 and one of Korea’s earliest underground shopping arcades, the 3,261-square-meter space has remained mostly intact since it was created in the early 1980s.
City officials said the new venue will go beyond a traditional exhibition hall, creating a place where visitors can stay, interact and experience immersive content in a unique underground setting.
Plans include large-scale media art installations using the tunnel’s walls and structures as projection surfaces, along with interactive exhibits that respond to visitors’ movement through light, sound and digital effects.
The venue will also host K-fashion exhibitions, runway events, brand showcases and pop-up stores featuring K-pop merchandise, video content and virtual idol-themed experiences.
The city said the project is being developed as a new public-private partnership model, with Seoul providing infrastructure while a private operator oversees creative content and programming.
Safety upgrades, including ventilation, fire prevention and evacuation systems, are currently being installed in cooperation with Seoul Metro ahead of the planned opening.
Once completed, visitors will be able to access the new underground cultural space through Euljiro 1-ga Station on Subway Line 2.
