Jisepo Jinseong Fortress in Geoje is drawing visitors this spring as lavender and golden coreopsis flowers bloom across the historic coastal site overlooking the sea.

Located behind Seonchang Village in Ilun-myeon, the fortress dates back to 1441 during the reign of King Sejong and was later reinforced in 1490 under King Seongjong as part of the region’s coastal defense system. The site remains an important historical landmark in Geoje.

Since 2018, Geoje City has gradually improved the surrounding area while preserving the protected cultural heritage zone. Using previously unused land within the fortress grounds, the city created a flower garden covering approximately 10,600 square meters in an effort to encourage tourism and revitalize the area.

One of the site’s most distinctive features is the contrast between the purple flower fields spread along the fortress slopes and the open ocean views beyond, creating one of Geoje’s more recognizable seasonal landscapes.

The area changes throughout the year with different flowers blooming by season. Lavender and coreopsis dominate during May and June, followed by verbena and hydrangeas in summer, and red spider lilies in autumn.

Local officials say the fortress has increasingly become a popular destination for visitors looking to combine coastal scenery, seasonal flowers, and historical attractions in one location.
