The Korea Grand Festival, the largest government-led discount event in history, will kick off at the end of this month and run for about ten days, with roughly 30,000 companies participating across the country.
At an economic ministers’ meeting on the 2nd, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Koo Yoon-chul announced the government’s Korea Grand Festival Promotion Plan, outlining efforts to boost consumer spending and ensure greater benefits for non-metropolitan regions.
The event combines two major existing campaigns, the Korea Sale Festa and the Donghaeng Festival, into one nationwide celebration of consumption.
Running from October 29 to November 9, the festival will feature manufacturers, retailers, and small business owners offering record-level incentives.
The government has pledged to direct more discounts to regional economies, increasing local gift certificate discount rates by 0.5 percentage points during the event.
The metropolitan area will see a 15% discount (up from 10%), while non-metropolitan and depopulated areas will enjoy higher rates of 18% and 20%, respectively.
A 2 billion won prize event will also be held, offering shoppers one lottery ticket for every 50,000 won spent at small businesses or traditional markets. The grand prize, 20 million won, will go to a participant who spent money outside the capital region, in a move designed to encourage regional spending.
Additionally, five major Korean automakers will provide their lowest prices of the year on mid-size sedans and SUVs, while 870,000 accommodation coupons will be issued to promote local tourism.
Across the country, 26 duty-free shops, including six online stores, will offer special discounts of up to 40%.
The government expects the Korea Grand Festival to serve as a major economic boost, driving consumption recovery and revitalizing regional economies ahead of the winter season.
