Korea Destinations: Escape the summer heat with 18 cool getaways across Gyeongnam

As temperatures rise across Korea, Gyeongnam province is encouraging travelers to look beyond the usual beach destinations with a collection of 18 summer attractions spread throughout the province.

From rafting and island escapes to forest retreats and cultural landmarks, the recommendations highlight a wide variety of ways to stay cool during the holiday season.

Adventure on the Water

For visitors seeking excitement, several destinations offer water-based activities.

In Changwon, the Masan Marine Leisure Sports Center provides beginner-friendly programs including kayaking and other marine sports under professional instruction.

Jinju’s Mulbit Naru Rest Area also hosts seasonal kayaking, paddleboarding and water safety programs along the Nam River.

Families looking for larger attractions can head to Gimhae Lotte Water Park, one of Korea’s largest water parks, featuring giant wave pools and large-scale water slides. On Hadong’s Daedo Island, visitors can enjoy a combination of water park facilities, mudflat experiences, fishing, coastal walking trails and trekking.

Those after more adrenaline can experience rafting on the Gyeongho River in Sancheong. The approximately 12-kilometer course winds through clear mountain waters flowing from Jirisan National Park, offering several rapids during the two-and-a-half-hour journey.

Beach Escapes Along the Southern Coast

Gyeongnam’s coastline also offers several well-known summer destinations.

Bijindo Island, located off the coast of Tongyeong, is famous for its unique dumbbell-shaped landscape and the sandy beach connecting its two islands within Hallyeohaesang National Park.

Namildae Beach in Sacheon combines wide sandy shores with dramatic coastal scenery, including the distinctive Elephant Rock formation at one end of the beach.

Further west, Sangju Silver Sand Beach in Namhae remains one of Korea’s best-known beaches, with its long crescent-shaped shoreline, gentle waters and pine forest making it especially popular with families.

Forests, Valleys and Mountain Retreats

Travelers looking to escape the heat inland will find several cool natural retreats.

Hobakso Valley in Miryang features crystal-clear streams, granite rock formations and shaded walking trails beneath Mt. Gajisan. Nearby Eoreumgol Valley offers another popular stop during the summer months.

Geoje Natural Recreation Forest provides forest cabins, camping facilities and panoramic views across Geoje and the surrounding islands from Mt. Nojasan.

Yangsan’s Hongryong Waterfall draws visitors with its three-tiered cascade surrounded by dense woodland, while Okcheon Valley in Changnyeong offers cool mountain streams flowing from Mt. Hwawang.

Geochang’s Suseungdae Tourist Area combines shaded valleys with riverside scenery and hosts the Geochang International Theatre Festival from late July through early August.

In Hapcheon, Odosan Natural Recreation Forest offers camping, forest healing programs and quiet mountain scenery, earning recognition as one of Korea’s leading wellness tourism destinations.

Scenic Walks and Cultural Stops

For visitors interested in combining sightseeing with culture, several destinations offer memorable summer walks.

Tapbawi Rock in Uiryeong overlooks the Nam River and is known for local legends surrounding the unusual rock formation.

Haman’s Lotus Theme Park reaches its peak in July, when thousands of lotus flowers bloom across the expansive park, including the rare Ara Hongryeon variety.

Goseong’s Sangjokam County Park features dramatic sea cliffs and one of the world’s most significant dinosaur footprint fossil sites, while photo spots and sea caves add to its appeal.

Near Jirisan, Seoamjeongsa Temple in Hamyang stands at the entrance to Chilseong Valley and is renowned for its stone-carved Buddha figures built directly into the surrounding rock.

With options ranging from beaches and rivers to forests and cultural attractions, Gyeongnam offers visitors plenty of opportunities to escape the summer heat while exploring different parts of the province.
