The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was created in 1953 with the Korean War armistice, known as one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world. The DMZ has remained almost untouched by humans for over 70 years. Ironically, the symbol of Korea’s division has become a sanctuary for wildlife including endangered species like Asiatic black bears and leopard cats. Today, visitors can take safe tours from nearby cities like Paju, reflecting on both the scars of war and the beauty of nature.
