Rain to bring start of monsoon season to Busan, Korea

Busan is expected to see the start of this year’s monsoon season from today, as a stationary front moves north across the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), rain fell yesterday south of Jeju Island as the North Pacific High expanded and pushed the seasonal rain front northward.
The rain is expected to spread across Jeju before reaching the country’s southern coast early this morning, with showers forecast to arrive in Busan later in the morning.
The KMA said the rainfall will mark the official start of the monsoon season for both Jeju and the southern regions.
For Jeju, the late-June onset would be the third-latest since nationwide weather records began in 1973.
The latest recorded start remains July 5, 1982. If the southern region’s monsoon begins on July 1 as forecast, it will be the fifth-latest on record.
