One of Seoul’s most unusual spring events is returning to the Han River as 170 contestants gather not to run, dance, or perform — but to sleep.

2026 Hangang Jampereojagi Contest takes place on May 2 at Yeouido Hangang Park’s Multiplaza, marking the third edition of the increasingly popular public nap competition first launched in 2024.

Hosted by Seoul, the event turns rest into a full spectator sport, with participants judged on how deeply and peacefully they can sleep outdoors despite a series of deliberate interruptions.

Organizers will attempt to disturb contestants with feather tickling, mosquito buzzing sounds, and other distractions, while sleep-tracking data will be used to measure deep sleep duration and overall sleep quality.

This year’s contest has expanded to 170 participants, all selected in advance through personal application stories submitted earlier this month. Contestants range from exhausted office workers and hospital staff to couples simply hoping to enjoy an uninterrupted nap along the river.

Adding to the entertainment, the event will also feature a public-voted Best Dresser competition for the most creative pajama outfits, giving spectators another reason to stop by.

The competition begins at 3 p.m. on May 2, and visitors to Yeouido Hangang Park can freely watch the sleeping showdown while also enjoying the nearby outdoor reading and cultural programs set up along the riverfront.
