Seoul is reimagining the Jonggak underground shopping arcade as a space where people can rest, try new experiences, and spend time rather than simply pass through.

The city has begun transforming vacant units inside the arcade into everyday civic spaces, starting with an AI powered Smart Shelter that opened in December. By March, a new indoor screen park golf facility will also be added, expanding the arcade’s role as a small scale lifestyle hub in the city center.

The Smart Shelter covers about 26 square meters and is divided into two zones. One focuses on shopping and technology, featuring an AI virtual fitting mirror that allows visitors to see how clothing sold in the arcade looks on them without trying it on. The system is connected to actual store inventory and helps users compare styles quickly while also giving shop owners a space to consult with customers.

The second zone is a study and rest area designed with nearby offices and academies in mind. It offers desks, seating, free wi fi, and power outlets, making it a convenient place for students and office workers to study, work briefly, or take a break.

Building on this approach, the city is now converting another empty shop into a screen park golf space, with construction underway and completion expected by March. The indoor facility will feature four digital golf systems that recreate park golf courses using screens and sensors, allowing people to play regardless of weather or season.

Beginner friendly instruction sessions will also be offered, with the possibility of expanding programs based on demand. The goal is to attract a wider range of visitors, including first time players and older residents, while adding a light recreational option to the underground space.

The Smart Shelter is already open to the public, while details on the screen park golf opening will be announced through the Seoul Facilities Corporation once construction is complete.
